A metallic floor is a pigmented epoxy pour where reflective particles suspend in the resin and move as it levels and cures. The result reads like stone or poured metal, with depth a flat color cannot produce. It is the highest-visual-impact system in concrete coating, and it is genuinely a one-off. The same pigments poured twice give two different floors.
How the Effect Is Built
A base coat goes down first, pigmented in the dominant color. The metallic layer is poured over it while it is still working, and the secondary pigments are introduced and then manipulated, whether spread, blown, or dragged, to create the movement. As the resin levels, the pigments separate and settle into the cells and veining that give the floor its character.
Then it gets sealed. A clear topcoat protects the effect and sets the sheen. Full gloss maximizes depth. Satin tones it down and hides more.
The whole thing sits on the same prep any coating needs: diamond grinding, crack repair, and a moisture reading. A metallic floor over an untested slab is an expensive thing to lose.
Choosing a Palette
Two-pigment combinations are the most predictable and usually the most convincing. A dark base with a lighter metallic pulls off stone and marble effects well. Three or more pigments get busy quickly.
Darker floors hide dust and traffic. Lighter floors brighten a basement that has no windows, which in a lot of Southern Maryland homes describes most of the basement. Copper and bronze pigments read warm under incandescent light and can go muddy under cool LED, so the lighting in the room is worth discussing before the palette is locked.
What to Expect on the Job
Metallic pours want a controlled environment. Temperature, humidity, and airflow all change how the resin levels, and Southern Maryland summers bring humidity that has to be managed rather than ignored. Doors stay shut. The space is out of service longer than a flake floor, typically a full cure before anything heavy goes back on it.
